What to expect on an initial consultation?

Some people can be a bit nervous on their first visit but don’t worry there’s no need to be.

When you arrive at the clinic one of our friendly staff will be there to welcome you at reception with a smile.

How long will the initial consultation last?

An initial consultation will usually last around one hour and will be split into different sections

The Subjective history – A detailed chat to gather as much information important about your injury or condition to form a hypothesis and direct our practical assessment. A typical subjective history will ask the symptoms, behaviour and history of your condition, your previous medical and family history. We will also look at contributing internal and external factors which may be causing your problem.

The physical assessment – After gathering all our information we will then start to test our hypothesis looking at posture, functional movements, muscle tests, accessory joint test, ligament test, nerve and vascular testing plus much more depending on the signs and symptoms and where we feel appropriate.

Diagnosis, advice and treatment plan – All the information from both parts of the assessment are then used to formulate a diagnosis. We will then discuss what’s wrong, why? And will advise you on the possible options of treating your injury or condition and preventing it from returning again.

What to wear?

We recommend you wear shorts and top (and a bra or sports bra for ladies). This enables us to have a good look at your spine and posture. For some treatments and assessments we may ask you to remove your top in order to assess the condition or injury more thoroughly.

If you are uncomfortable with this then please let us know prior to your appointment so we can make arrangements that you are comfortable with.
